Kazakh Tazy Steals the Spotlight at World Dog Show 2025
The World Dog Show 2025 in Helsinki marked a historic moment for Kazakhstan as the nation’s revered hunting dog, the Tazy, made a sensational debut on the global stage. Competing for the first time since receiving preliminary recognition from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the Tazy breed not only captivated judges and spectators but also clinched seven major championship titles—an extraordinary feat for a newcomer.
Among the standout performers were five Tazy dogs who triumphed in their respective categories. Tamerlan earned the prestigious Junior World Winner 2025 title, while Latysh was crowned World Winner. Aru secured the Best of Opposite Sex title, with Kokserek and Pana taking runner-up positions in their respective categories. These victories underscored the breed’s exceptional qualities and signaled its arrival as a serious contender in the international dog-breeding arena.
The Kazakh delegation, led by the Union of Dog Breeders of Kazakhstan, made a striking impression with a national stand designed as a semi-yurt adorned with traditional ornaments. This cultural showcase not only highlighted the breed’s heritage but also drew crowds eager to learn more about the Tazy’s history, genetics, and working capabilities. Visitors posed for photos, collected informational booklets, and engaged with breeders, many expressing interest in acquiring Tazy puppies and training materials.
Bauyrzhan Serikkali, chairman of the Kazakh Kennel Union, emphasized the breed’s symbolic significance: “We are proud to have presented not only a unique hunting dog, but also a cultural symbol of Kazakhstan.” He noted that the enthusiastic response from international experts affirmed the Tazy’s rightful place in the global dog-breeding community and expressed readiness to collaborate with foreign clubs and kennels.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev personally congratulated the Kazakh Canine Union, sending a telegram to commend their success. His support reflects a broader national effort to preserve and promote Kazakhstan’s indigenous breeds. Since 2023, the government has taken active steps to elevate the status of the Tazy and Tobet breeds, including passing legislation and tasking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with international promotion. The Union’s full membership in the FCI and the breed’s provisional recognition in 2024 were key milestones in this journey.
The Tazy, often referred to as one of the treasures of the Zhet Kazyna (Seven Treasures), is more than just a dog—it’s a living emblem of Kazakhstan’s cultural and historical identity. Its debut in Helsinki was not only a triumph for breeders but also a moment of pride for the Kazakh diaspora, who attended a special presentation of the breed during the show.
With full FCI recognition expected by 2034, the road ahead is long but promising. As Kazakhstan continues to showcase the Tazy in international competitions and strengthen breeding programs, the breed is poised to become a hallmark of the nation’s heritage and excellence in canine sports.
