NFL-player LeShon Johnson convicted in federal Dogfighting case
Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson, known for his time with the New York Giants, has been found guilty in what authorities describe as the largest federal dog-fighting case to date.
Last week, an Oklahoma federal jury convicted Johnson on six felony counts linked to illegal dog-fighting operations. The charges stem from violations of the Animal Welfare Act, specifically for possessing, selling, transporting, and delivering animals for use in fighting. The Department of Justice announced the verdict on Monday. Johnson now awaits sentencing and faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine per count, which could total 30 years and $1.5 million if maximum penalties are applied. Authorities confiscated 190 dogs, all of which Johnson surrendered to the government. Federal officials are now pursuing forfeiture proceedings to ensure the animals are rehabilitated and rehomed.
‘This criminal profited off of the misery of innocent animals,’ said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. ‘He will face severe consequences for his vile crimes.’
Bondi praised the coordinated effort between law enforcement and prosecutors, stating that the case highlights the government’s commitment to combat animal cruelty.
